Adventure Research

Adventure films usually feature a quest or journey. In most adventure films, the quest or journey comes from a historical background that encompasses huge value. The characters often face obstacles and barriers that they must overcome in order to succeed in their quest, usually, there is a villain that impedes the main character's progress to success.

Most action films are combined with other genres like action, comedy, or drama. Popular Directors of Adventure films include Stephen Spielberg, Peter Jackson, J.J. Abrams, and James Cameron. The target audience of adventure films was initially men ages 13-30 due to most of the main characters (heroes) being men, however, Hollywood has recently been including female love interest that may act as sidekicks. Thus most adventure films have a much wider target audience nowadays, including children and women.

Typical production techniques of the adventure genre are fast camerawork, showcasing energetic scenes like chasing, battles/fighting, running, overcoming obstacles and booby traps. These scenes may also be accompanied with fast-paced music. Common sounds within the adventure genre would include the withdrawal of a sword, footsteps, the sound of natural landscapes such as jungle noises or explosions. Theme songs in adventure films would be fast-paced and of high tempo.

Let's take a look at "Avengers: Endgame".  While "Endgame" is definitely a hybrid of genres (sci-fi, action, fantasy, drama) it embodies and Adventure film as the characters have to go on a quest to retrieve a highly valued object, infinity stones. In a nutshell, superheroes must retrieve an object in order to prevent the end of humanity. Additionally, there is a villain, Thanos who prevents the main characters from achieving this goal.  In "Endgame" techniques such as intense, and heavy CGI, quick cuts and edits, and intense music aid in the production's ability to convey a sense of adventure to the audience.

We can also examine "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark".  An archeologist, Jones is tasked with finding the Ark of the Covenant and is thrown obstacles and a villain, the Nazis. Another common convention of the Adventure genre is the inclusion of a sidekick: Sallah.  "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark" embodies the adventure drama as the protagonist is impeded on his journey by many obstacles such as lack of time, physical environment, and moral implications.
